A lawn jockey is a small statue or figurine, often made of cast iron or other materials, that is commonly used as a lawn ornament. Traditionally, lawn jockeys are depicted as a young Black boy dressed in a jockey uniform, including a cap and riding clothes. The figure is typically shown holding a lantern or a ring, and it is positioned outdoors, often near driveways or entrances.

The historical origins of lawn jockeys are tied to the horse racing culture of the 18th and 19th centuries in the United States. Originally, these statues served a functional purpose as hitching posts for horses. The ring held by the lawn jockey allowed riders to tether their horses when dismounting or conducting business.
However, over time, the use and depiction of lawn jockeys have become controversial due to racial stereotyping. The exaggerated features and subservient poses of these statues perpetuated negative racial stereotypes, and their display has been criticized for reinforcing offensive imagery.

In recent years, there has been increased awareness of the racial implications associated with lawn jockeys, leading to debates about their historical significance and appropriateness as decorative items. Some individuals choose to collect and display them for historical reasons, while others find them offensive and opt for more inclusive and culturally sensitive lawn decorations. As a result, there have been efforts to contextualize or reinterpret these statues within a broader understanding of their historical context.

The “cavalier spirit” statue started around 1947. The style we produce at Custom Cavaliers refers to a relatively new or specialized term for artists and collectors that has emerged as an equestrian cultural concept. The art world is dynamic and new styles emerge over time and we’re embracing this heirloom style with a contemporary twist. Our artistic representation moves away from the traditional depiction and gives a fresh and creative take on the concept of lawn jockeys.

We are proud to design your vary own unique and whimsical Custom Cavalier to celebrate the spirit of the bond between a rider and horse.
